Jen Tom, marathon runner: Previously a miler and a 400 hurdler, I most recently discovered the joys of long distance running. I began running marathons in 2007 and have since completed over 20 full marathons throughout the country. I have been competing in the Boston Marathon consecutively since 2009 (2014 will be my 6th consecutive Boston Marathon) and have an ultimate goal of qualifying for the 2016 Olympic Trials in the Marathon (26.2 miles).
I run above all for the pure enjoyment of running – the physical, mental and scientific components of running. I’m motivated to physically push myself for both speed and endurance, while learning what mental state best allows me to achieve both physically. In addition to my sheer passion for running, I’m also motivated when I hear other runner’s stories of struggle. The stories I hear about people overcoming serious medical issues, or people with a desire to run but are not physically capable to inspire me to keep running AND to inspire others to love running as much as I do!
