The Making of moby's New Track "The Lonely Night
In celebration of Record Store Day this year, moby and Mark Lanegan collaborated on an exclusive track that was released as a limited edition 7” this past 20th of April. Our musical headliner at three Wanderlust Festivals this year (WLCO, WLCA, and WLBC) Moby describes in his journal why he chose Mark Lanegan to work with on this track, "I've been a fan of Mark's from his early SST Records days, and I've always wanted to work with him. He has one of the best and most distinctive voices of the last 25 years. Now that we live near each other it ended up being really easy working on a song together."
As for the unique, cacophonous sound they were able to create as the track progresses, moby describes how he and record producer, Spike Stent, broke the mold somewhat by taking a "clean", multi-track recording and giving it a very grungy, lo-fi treatment in this "making of" video below:
"I dont think either one of us had ever thought of taking an entire track and putting it through a distortion pedal," moby explains, "but being old punk rockers we gave ourselves this challenge and said 'We're not going to use any of the original instruments, we're just going to only record the track -- every intrument -- through a distortion pedal going through an amp.' "
